A PAPER STRAW STORY

The first Paper Straws were invented in the 1800's and continued to be produced until plastic counterparts started to take over in the 70's.  Their use and production had all but disappeared by the 21st century.  In 2008 the founders of Tipi Straws went on a journey to find the childhood straws of their youth.. they were the first to reinvent colourful paper straws and in early 2018 they created a new start up company focussed on the next stage of their Eco Design Evolution.  TIPI was born.

In the past 10 years, prior to TIPI, our paper straws have featured in boundless style press, including also every lifestyle magazine. Whilst our straws are still stylish, our story now is more than that.  It is an authentic journey of a female eco entrepreneur, a kitchen table ideas, global collaboration and a farm based rural family business with a mission to become the biggest innovators in our sector.

TIPI is an ECO start up based in the Wild Welsh borders near the book town of Hay On Wye. The Welsh hills are spawning a new generation of eco entrepreneurs in multiple fields .. we call it ECO VALLEY.. a planet friendly sister to the Silcone tech one.

TIPI - 6th WORLD FIRST FOR YOUNG START UP

19th July 2019

Today TIPI ECO the small Welsh eco innovator introduced another world first to market - TIPI PUTLERY® PREMIUM PAPER CUTLERY. This makes 6 world firsts for this self funded eco start up, since their formation in 2018 and their first venture and patent pending in a new product category, away from Paper Straws.

The founders are pioneers in the Paper Straw Market, having been the first to reintroduce them to Europe over 10 years ago, in a rainbow of new colours and helping set modern standards along the way.  As competition in this market increased and cheaper versions flooded the market, giving paper straws a bad name; founder Jacqui Horton (TIPI Chief) decided to focus this new venture on building innovation in the sector and also expanding and improving the use of paper and other natural commodities as an affordable quality alternative for plastic in consumer goods.

So how have TIPI achieved what bigger players have not?

“We know our market, we know paper straws, others are just learning how to make them properly, we were ready to tackle the next stage. 10 years of mistakes, creates an arsenal of solutions. We have put them quickly to good use.” - Jacqui, TIPI Chief / Founder

Using a collaborative approach to manufacture and distribution, TIPI have partners across the globe and plans are in the pipeline for expansion of production and licensing of their IP over the next 12 months.

All products are available for licensing or sale and new items are production ready delivering from August 2019. Interested parties can contact the team in the first instance hello@tipistraws.com

30th June 2018

We would like to introduce you to another of our world first innovations…

THE SUPER BENDY™ CARTON PAPER STRAW

Offering super flexibility and durability across multiple sizes, with the eco credentials of premium paper straws. The TIPI SUPER BENDY™ CARTON is a world first in its’ class with patent pending technology and registered designs, which are production ready to meet multiple market demands.TIPI the small Welsh design company is once again leading the way in eco technical developments. For the last 18 months we have been trialling a variety of techniques. Our patent pending technology created for our TIPI SUPER BENDY™, launched earlier this year, has been further developed to offer a production ready slim version, perfect for cartons.

The change in law on plastic straws creates an issue for the portion pack consumer market, which until now had no viable alternative for what it calls its’ “U BEND” straw, for things like juice and milk cartons. Our SUPER BENDY™ Carton Straw has been created specifically as a like for like solution, compatible with carton packs and industrial filling machines.

Like our 4mm Straight Carton Straw (known industrially as the “I STRAW”), our Super Bendy Carton can also be used with chain wrapping production techniques and films for wet environment protection. These are perfect solutions for the soon to be banned single use plastic straws adorning cartons on supermarket aisles.

We are working with many global brands to facilitate their use as quickly as possible. All of whom are keen to revert to eco alternatives. The technology is available for licensing and the straws are production ready delivering from Autumn 2019. WORLD’S FIRST SUPER BENDY™  PAPER STRAW

21st May 2018

We would like to introduce you to another of our world first innovations…

THE SUPER BENDY™ PAPER STRAW

Offering super flexibility and durability across multiple sizes, with the eco credentials of premium paper straws. The TIPI SUPER BENDY™ is a world first in its’ class with patent pending technology and registered designs, which are production ready to meet multiple market demands.

TIPI have created a product which can readily replace many plastic alternatives, which until now was not possible. This small Welsh design company is once again leading the way in eco technical developments.

So what makes it so special?Paper Straws by their nature are built to both compost naturally (like paper), yet remain durable enough to perform in liquid whilst the consumer is sipping their drinks. The process of manufacture makes the straws as sturdy as possible, our premium quality straws are not made or meant to bend.

The new TIPI SUPER BENDY™ patent pending technology, allows multi directional bend and recovery with no reduction in functionality. The TIPI SUPER BENDY™ can bend OVER 180 degrees… our patent pending super technology delivers incredible movement in rigid paper, which allows the straw to be both durable and flexible at the same time. We have multiple lengths and diameters ready for production, which can be printed like our normal straws.

CARE MARKET

The Care Market including the NHS and many individuals with disabilities need to use a straw with a bend to drink. Until now they have had to use a Plastic bendy straw as there were limited viable eco alternatives. It is one of the key exemptions missed in UK legislative proposals due to the lack of affordable alternatives. We have adaptations of the SUPER BENDY™ specifically created for this market.

We are working with many global brands to facilitate their use as quickly as possible. All of whom are keen to revert to eco alternatives. The technology is available for licensing and the straws are production ready delivering from Autumn 2019. TIPI  -
WORLD’S FIRST STROON® SPOON PAPER STRAW

18th January 2019

We would like to introduce you to another of our world first innovations…

THE STROON® PAPER STRAW

Developed to fulfil the needs of the Slushie and Iced Drinks market, the TIPI STROON® - part Straw, part Spoon, has a design registered special cut end, which can easily replace plastic alternatives. It delivers a fabulous consumer experience alongside the durability, style and quality for which TIPI are known.

TIPI have devised a new 4 ply construction (standard straws are 3) forming a sturdy heavier weight straw from which our design registered spoon end is cut. This combination ensures that the shaped end is not compromised during use.Our technology also offers the option to change the size of the spoon cut to allow different straw and tube diameters.

We have created a collection of STROON® straws with bore sizes from 6mm to over 12mm diameter, offering multiple innovative uses for consumer markets from cartons to smoothies and creamy super slurps! The Paper can be printed with food grade inks in our usual rainbow of colours and patterns or your own branding.Creating a large bore (diameter) straw from paper, and cutting the end without unravelling, whilst retaining strength and durability, were the key challenges facing the TIPI team.

Our TIPI STROON® shape and technique is the first of its’ kind in production.

The TIPI team collaborated with UK and EU Iced Drink Distributors over the past year to ensure that we created the optimum straw for the market. Consumer tests were conducted on a variety of their in-house drinks to ensure durability.

The TIPI STROON® is available for bulk orders from Spring / Summer 2019.Interested parties can contact the team in the first instance at hello@tipistraws.com

TIPI - OUR STORY

You can read our story HERE or download our PRESS RELEASE

For over 10 years the founders of TIPI ECO have been designing planet friendly consumer products. Based in the UK, they were the first to reintroduce printed paper straws back to the EU and have always worked in partnership with multiple global manufacturers, including the UK, to deliver innovation and help set the standard on modern Paper Straws - sold via TIPI STRAWS (TIPISTRAWS.COM).

TIPI was the first paper straw brand created and made in the UK.The demand for eco alternatives to consumer single use plastics has rocketed since early 2018, with Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet being a catalyst for change. With the plastic free movement in full throttle, to keep ahead of the curve, TIPI have been concentrating on what they do best.. innovation and consumer design solutions.

Founder Jacqui Horton, is a seasoned product developer with both a technical and trend tracking background in fashion. Her insight into consumer patterns alongside her design background and experience with Paper Straws, has enabled her to pioneer an alternative approach to eco problem solving. She was the first to reintroduce Paper Straws back to the UK market in 2008, adding a modern twist in the form of an array of rainbow stripes and patterns.

This small Welsh company, based near the border book town of Hay on Wye, continues to lead the way in a crowded market place full of big players. Their collaborative approach to design and manufacturing has ensured that they remain at the forefront of market needs, ahead of the curve.

Why TIPI? Like their namesake ancient nomadic dwellings we endeavour to create products which are simple, functional, beautiful, made to last yet #leavenotrace
